Medulloepithelioma of the ciliary body: ultrasonographic biomicroscopic findings.

چکیده
ntraocular medulloepithelioma is an uncommon embryogenic neoplasm of neuroepithelial origin that usually develops from the nonpigmented epithelium of the ciliary body, retina, and optic nerve.1 Clinically, medulloepithelioma usually appears as a tumor of the ciliary body; only rarely does it arise in the optic nerve and retina. It frequently occurs on the ciliary body of a young child as a fleshy gray or pink mass, which, on examination using slit lamp biomicroscopy, often reveals cysts. These cysts impart an irregular shape to the tumor surface.1,2 The tumor tends to be locally aggressive and can invade adjacent intraocular structures, but it rarely metastasizes.1,3 The utility of conventional echography in the diagnosis of medulloepithelioma has been established,4 but, to our knowledge, no reports have been published describing the ultrasonographic biomicroscopic features of medulloepithelioma. Ultrasonographic biomicroscopy (UBM) is an ideal method to analyze the anterior segment5; it allows an accurate assessment of iris and ciliary body tumors, including size, tumor margins, and internal characteristics.6–8 Moreover, UBM can help with the differential diagnosis of ocular tumors. In this report, we describe the UBM characteristics of medulloepithelioma.

Intraocular medulloepithelioma is a rare embryonal neoplasm that occurs predominantly in children and arises from the primitive medullary epithelium of the optic cup. Medulloepitheliomas that contain heterotopic elements or tissues such as brain, cartilage, or rhabdomyoblasts are classified as teratoid, and tumors lacking these elements are classified as nonteratoid medulloepitheliomas. Both no...
متن کاملThe Masquerades of a Childhood Ciliary Body Medulloepithelioma: A Case of Chronic Uveitis, Cataract, and Secondary Glaucoma
Ciliary body medulloepitheliomas in childhood often masquerade other intraocular conditions due to its insidious nature as well as its secondary effects on proximal intraocular tissues in the anterior chamber. We report a case where a ciliary body medulloepithelioma in a two-year-old boy presents with chronic uveitis, cataract, and an uncontrolled secondary glaucoma after an innocuous blunt ocu...
متن کاملOn the Classification and Grading of Medulloepithelioma of the Eye.
Medulloepithelioma is a rare congenital tumor of the ciliary body and iris. The current classification and grading of medulloepithelioma shows inconsistencies and does not reflect clinical behavior. This position paper discusses the backgrounds of the current classification and intends to initiate a discussion on an alternative classification and grading scheme.
متن کاملNeovascular glaucoma in a child: an unusual presentation of medulloepithelioma
A healthy 12 month old infant without significant medical history presented with left eye redness for one week. Ophthalmic examination showed elevated intraocular pressure with iris neovascularization in the affected eye with increased optic nerve cupping. Scleral depression revealed a ciliary body mass in the supratemporal quadrant. A large, non-pigmented, vascular mass was noted; biopsy resul...
